Imagine a Bollywood dance number, with the actors dancing minus the background dancers. That certainly would not project a merry picture to the onlookers. Sadly, the current picture doesn’t look too good.
Asked
about the situation, Ravi Kanwar, General Secretary of Cine Dancers
Association, commented - "There has been a drop of 70 to 75% in the
number of dancers. We are conducting a massive audition next month to scout for new talent to fill the gap. The pay is good and depending on their talent, dancers can earn up to Rs 90,000 per month."
As per the sources, the growing dearth of background
dancers is due to the fact that a majority of dancers now shift to
their own choreography centres and the remaining go on to try their luck
in acting.
Ace
choreographer Saroj Khan revealed - "We lack dancers because aaj kal
har ladki who is beautiful wants to become an actor. Who wants to become
a background dancer?" The industry
has woken up to the problem and Ramesh Taurani, who has a penchant for
elaborate songs, said, "Yes, this is an important issue facing the industry. We have woken up to it. We need to sort this out fast as new talent will make it easier for all the producers."
Both Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala were at the receiving end of this problem recently, when they required 350 dancers for a song for their film ‘2 States’ and the Dancers Association had a hard time finding them.
Let’s see if the industry gets real serious about this issue and solve it once and for all.
