Page 2: Star Wars, BTTF, Sweeney Todd, Christmas Story, Walking Dead, Miyazaki, Ghostbusters, Harry Potter

Page 2 is a compilation of stories and news tidbits, which for whatever reason, didn’t make the front page of /Film. After the jump we’ve included 36 different items, fun images, videos, casting tidbits, articles of interest and more. It’s like a mystery grab bag of movie web related goodness.

Dwayne Johnson Will Be Lost at Sea in ‘Not Without Hope’

Are “lost at sea” pics the trend of the moment? Ang Lee won an Oscar earlier this year for stranding Suraj Sharma in the middle of the Pacific, and J.C. Chandor and Robert Redford put out All Is Lost just last month. Plus, even as we speak, Angelina Jolie is shooting the World War II survival drama Unbroken and Ron Howard is plowing on with the Moby Dick-inspired In the Heart of the Sea.
Now Dwayne Johnson is the latest to jump on the aimlessly floating bandwagon. The G.I. Joe star has signed on to star in Relativity’s Not Without Hope, based on the real-life tale of four football players who get stuck at sea. Hit the jump for all the details.

‘Stalingrad’ Trailer: One of the Nastiest Battles Ever Fought Becomes a Big Action Movie

Stalingrad is Russia’s entry in the “giant war movie” category for 2013. It recreates the extraordinarily vicious and devastating WWII battle that shut down Hitler’s efforts on the eastern front. (And which has become the subject for many a video game battle scene.) But this isn’t just a big war movie; it’s a big war movie shot in IMAX and presented in 3D and rendered in familiar blue and orange.
Fedor Bondarchuk (9th Company, The Inhabited Island) directs, and has certainly made a big movie. Check out the trailer below to get a sense of the action, which seems like it has been polished up nicely to make the horrifying battle more visually appealing.

‘Noah’ Trailer: Russell Crowe Gets a Vision From God, Courtesy of Darren Aronofsky

Following yesterday’s juicy little teaser, not one but two full-length trailers for Darren Aronofsky‘s Noah have arrived, and you can check out both of them after the jump.
Russell Crowe stars as the familiar Biblical hero, who’s driven by a vision from God to prepare for an upcoming flood that could wipe out all life on Earth. He builds an ark and begins to round up the animals, but not everyone (including villain Ray Winstone) is on board with his plan.

‘Out of the Furnace’ TV Spot: You Don’t Want to Mess With Woody Harrelson

Woody Harrelson‘s last feature role was as a time-traveling turkey in the animated family flick Free Birds, but don’t let that trick you into thinking he’s lost his edge. The new TV spot for Scott Cooper‘s Out of the Furnace has arrived, and he’s full-on terrifying in it.
The gritty drama stars Christian Bale as Russell, a steel mill worker whose Iraq vet brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) falls into the criminal underworld and eventually disappears. When the police fail to find Rodney, Russell sets out to discover the truth for himself. Check out the new video after the jump.

‘Cuban Fury’ Trailer: Nick Frost Unleashes His Inner Dance Demon

Nick Frost has made a nice career of playing sidekicks and supporting characters, often alongside frequent collaborator Simon Pegg. But as his unexpected straight-man turn in The World’s End showed, the guy’s certainly got the chops to lead a movie of his own. In Cuban Fury, he gets the chance to do just that.
Directed by James Griffiths (NBC’s Up All Night) from an idea by Frost, the comedy follows a lonely sad-sack named Bruce (Frost) who’s crushing on his gorgeous new boss Julia (Rashida Jones). Because this is a movie, the only way he can win her over is by mastering the art of dance. Good thing he used to be a child prodigy at salsa dancing — now all Bruce needs to do is rediscover his inner passion. Check out the trailer after the jump.

‘Independence Day 2′ Moved to Summer 2016, The 20th Anniversary of the Original Film

Briefly: Earlier today, 20th Century Fox moved around a bunch of their 2015 releases. One film conspicuously absent was Roland Emmerich‘s sequel, Independence Day 2. Well, it took a few more hours, but now the fate of that movie has been revealed. It’s still coming, but as some suspected, it has been moved back a whole year.
Independence Day 2 will now hit theaters July 1, 2016, not July 3, 2015. The new date just so happens to be almost 20 years to the day after the release of the original. Whether that was the happy coincidence, or if it’s to make room for Michael B. Jordan, or Will Smith, remains to be seen. But there’s now plenty more time to figure it all out.

Newcomer Travis Tope Could Lead Jason Reitman’s ‘Men, Women and Children’

Jason Reitman has worked with some pretty big names over the course of his career, including, most recently, Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin. His next film, however, could star a near-total unknown.
The filmmaker has reportedly offered a big role in Men, Women and Children to newcomer Travis Tope. Though the 22-year-old has just one completed feature on his resume at the moment (the 2007 indie Divine Souls), he’s definitely on his way up: Tope is also considering roles in Sacha Gervasi‘s November Criminals and Rupert Wyatt‘s The Gambler. More about all three projects and their potential leading man after the jump.

/Film Interview: Jennifer Lawrence Talks ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire,’ Why She Likes Promoting ‘X-Men’ and…Han Solo?

At 23, Jennifer Lawrence has reached heights most of us never even dream of. She won the Oscar for Best Actress with her second nomination, for Silver Linings Playbook. She stars in a superhero franchise and toplines another of the biggest franchises in Hollywood, The Hunger Games. Without a doubt, she’s one of the biggest stars in the world, yet has somehow managed to remain genuine, funny and unfiltered. Jennifer Lawrence isn’t only America’s sweetheart, she’s everyone’s sweetheart.
So, in short, sites like /Film usually don’t get to speak to her, especially not for a film as highly anticipated as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. But you ask nicely, expect to get turned down, and then somehow find yourself outside a hotel room, the only online outlet who’ll be speaking one on one, in person, with Hollywood’s darling. No pressure.
While I can’t gauge my performance, Lawrence did not disappoint. Even after two full days of non-stop press, Katniss Everdeen herself snuggled up on her hotel room chair, slippers and all, and spoke eloquently about the pathos in Catching Fire, its political messages, shooting with IMAX cameras, her duties as reigning Best Actress, how often she gets out to the movies, Short Term 12, “texting Fassbender” (yes, that one), why promoting X-Men movies can be better than Hunger Games and the insane Internet notion she could play a female Han Solo. ‘Girls’ Star Adam Driver Eyed for Nightwing in ‘Batman vs. Superman’

Hannah Hovarth’s knight in shining armor could become a bona fide superhero. Girls star Adam Driver is reportedly the frontrunner to play Dick Grayson a.k.a. Nightwing in Batman vs. Superman, which stars Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill as the titular superheroes. Meanwhile, other actors rumored to be in contention are Ezra Miller (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) and Penn Badgley (Gossip Girl). Hit the jump for more details on the character and the possible casting.

Watch Jar Jar Binks Die In This ‘Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace’ Deleted Scene Fan-Edit

Almost 15 years have passed and we just can’t get over Jar Jar Binks. The kid-friendly addition to Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace was a technological marvel when he first appeared in 1999, but his voice, antics and incredibly annoying luck quickly made him the most hated character in the Star Wars universe. Even though George Lucas himself cut the character back in the subsequent films (even going so far as blaming the entire creation of the Empire on him), fans still act like Jar Jar Binks was the only problem with the prequels.
Jokes about killing Jar Jar are about as old as the Internet itself but, this latest one is probably the best yet. A fan re-edited a deleted scene from The Phantom Menace in such a way that Jar Jar meets his untimely demise. Yousa check it out belowsa, okeeday?

Josh Brolin Says ‘Oldboy’ Hammerfight Scene Took Five Weeks to Prep, Sets Tone for Film

To fans, there are certain aspects of Spike Lee‘s Oldboy that have to be consistent with Chan-wook Park’s original. One of those is the hallway scene. In the original, Oh Dae-su wreaks havoc on a bunch of thugs in a hallway with nothing but a hammer. And it’s breathtaking sequence. Having seen trailers for the new film, you know the fight is in there; having seen the entire movie, I’ll say it takes the idea up a level. Literally.
In fact, Josh Brolin, who stars in the film, said the scene was so crucial and physically demanding, his personal physical preparation for just that scene (which is presented in one long take) informed his entire performance. Lee and crew prepped the scene for five weeks and they got it on the seventh take. Read Brolin’s story about the scene below.

Sequel Bits: ‘Terminator 5′ and ‘Ghostbusters 3′ Casting Rumors; ‘Sin City 2′ Title Change

Three major films have some not so major updates: two sets of casting rumors and a small title change. After the jump, read about the following:
  • A few names, including Emilia Clarke and Garrett Hedlund have been mentioned to possibly be up for Sarah and John Connor in Terminator 5.
  • Here we go again. Jonah Hill and Emma Stone‘s names have been mentioned again regarding Ghostbusters 3.
  • Sin City: A Dame To Kill For has reportedly been renamed Sin City: A Dame to Die For.

Cobie Smulders Thinks She’s Back for ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’

Unless something tragic happens in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, this probably goes without saying but, hey, we’ll say it anyway. In a new interview, S.H.I.E.L.D. operative Maria Hill — Cobie Smulders — says her character is coming back for 2015′s Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Gal Gadot, Elodie Yung, and Olga Kurylenko Testing for ‘Batman vs. Superman’

Talk is heating up about the possibility that Wonder Woman will show up in Zack Snyder‘s Batman vs. Superman. Rumors say that Jaimie Alexander was testing for a role in the film, even though her contract with Marvel makes any major role unlikely, and the particulars of her comments led to the idea that she was talking about Wonder Woman.
Now we know that three other actresses — Gal Gadot (Fast 6), Elodie Yung (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), and Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) — are testing or have tested for the lead female role in the film. Is that going to be a romantic interest for Bruce Wayne, or is the “tall, brunette, athletic and exotic” character going to be Wonder Woman?

Robert Rodriguez Directing First Two ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ TV Episodes

Robert Rodriguez is a prime partner in the new El Rey Network, which is the new “genre-busting cable network” aimed at the Latino audience, and we’ve known that one of the cornerstones of the El Rey programming would be a new From Dusk Till Dawn series. Rodriguez isn’t just producing the series, either; as it goes into production in Austin, TX, the announcement has come that he’s directing the first two hour-long episodes.
The show will remake and expand the movie in ten episodes, with D.J. Cotrona (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) as Seth Gecko, Zane Holtz (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) as Richie Gecko, Jesse Garcia (Sons of Anarchy) as new character Texas Ranger Freddie Gonzalez, and Don Johnson (Django Unchained, Miami Vice) as Sheriff Earl McGraw.

‘Oldboy’ Trailer: Spot The Digitally-Covered Butt Shot

I got a press release earlier today that describes the new Spike Lee film, Oldboy, as “a unique reinterpretation of the 2003 Korean film,” with that ’03 movie being the Park Chan-wook effort that turned the director into a globally-popular filmmaker. That’s a slightly new way to position a remake.
We’ve seen so many clips, violent glimpses, and featurettes for the film that a new trailer feels like it is coming in very late. And, in fact, this “new” trailer is basically the red-band one that landed over the summer, with a few changes to make it suitable for all audiences.  A couple bits of explicit violence are gone, as are two or three butt shots. In fact, one butt shot from the original trailer has been digitally altered for this one. Look for it below! Read More »

‘RoboCop’ Trailer: “Why Is America So Robo-Phobic?”

Director Jose Padilha seems to know that some people are looking at his remake of RoboCop with a jaundiced eye, and so he introduces the new trailer for the film with some of the same explanation that he offered at Comic Con.
In fact, this is a version of the reel that was shown at Comic Con this past summer, starting with drones patrolling the Middle East and Samuel L. Jackson‘s character railing against the fact that similar tactics are not being used to police the streets at home. That’s where OCP chairman Michael Keaton steps in, with a plan to “put a man inside a machine.” And thus, the new RoboCop is born. Of all the remakes we’ve seen of well-known properties, this one looks like it has the most potential to blend the original ideas with new concepts that give it a unique personality.
