Indian cinema@100: 12 fun facts about Deewar
Deewar (1975) remains one of director Yash Chopra's most seminal films. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Parveen Babi, Nirupa Roy and Neetu Singh, Deewar gave the anti-hero star billing with its tale of two brothers on opposite sides of the law. If 1973's Zanjeer created the Angry Young Man,Deewar brought him centrestage. The film was also hailed for its strong women characters - the mother who rejects her criminal son, and Anita, the gangster's girlfriend who drinks, smokes and falls pregnant.
Did you know:
1.Yash Chopra's original wishlist was Rajesh Khanna as Vijay Verma, Navin Nischol as Ravi Verma and Vyjayanthimala as their mother. Salim-Javed, who had written the script with Shatrughan Sinha in mind, had a fallout with Rajesh Khanna and refused to have him in the film. Navin Nischol and Vyjayanthimala both refused their roles when they heard Rajesh Khanna would not be in the film. Yash Chopra then cast Amitabh Bachchan as Vijay. He almost offered the mother's role to Waheeda Rehman but decided against it because she was playing Amitabh's love interest in Kabhi Kabhie. He finally cast Nirupa Roy as the mother, and Shashi Kapoor as Ravi.
2.When the scene in which Vijay speaks to an idol of Shiva in a temple saying Aaj khush toh bahut hoge tum was shot, Amitabh Bachchan insisted that nobody but director Yash Chopra be present. It was shot at night and took Big B 15 takes to get right, because he was so intimidated by the thought of having to challenge God.
3.Amitabh Bachchan shot Sholay and Deewar at the same time - Sholay in the mornings, Deewar at night. Both Yash Chopra and Ramesh Sippy have credited him with never being late for either shoot.
4.Sholay wasn't the only film Amitabh Bachchan shot at the same time as Deewar. After Sholaywrapped, Yash Chopra shot Deewar and Kabhi Kabhie simultaneously and he would often worry that Amitabh Bachchan, who was starring in both films, would get confused between Kabhi Kabhie's dreamy poet Amit and Deewar's man at odds with society Vijay.
5.Writers Salim-Javed reportedly asked for an unheard of fee of Rs 8 lakhs for Deewar. They wrote the entire script and dialogue in one go, taking 45 days. At the first reading, every actor was given a bound, completed script, which was a rarity at the time.
6.On most nights, the cast and crew would feast on street food after pack up, often paid for by Amitabh Bachchan. On the night the climax was being shot at Mumbai's Ballard Pier, they had to stop because it started raining. So they drove to Bhendi Bazaar and Amitabh treated everyone to junk food.
7.There were no dialogues written for Amitabh Bachchan's death scene. Yash Chopra allowed him to ad lib the entire scene.
8.Producer Gulshan Rai read the script twice and cried both times.
9.Amitabh Bachchan's knotted shirt was a last-minute compromise when he found that the shirt he was to wear was too long and flapped around his knees. So he knotted it at the waist instead, starting a trend.
10.Salim-Javed and Yash Chopra planned to make Deewar minus songs. They had to admit defeat to producer Gulshan Rai who insisted on having songs and R D Burman was roped in to compose the soundtrack which included the hit number Kehdoon tumhe.
11.However, the writers refused to compromise on the name of the film, which was criticized by the crew as being too dry. Whenever the subject was brought up, they would joke "Let's call it Geeli Deewar, dryness chali jayegi."
12.The dubbed English version of the film was called I'll Die For Mama.

Parveen Babi's accusations
She was rumoured to have diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia - a genetic mental illness - although she regularly denied it and said that it was a conspiracy by the film industry and the media to malign her image and make her appear as insane so that they can cover up their crimes!
Amitabh Bachchan's accident

How Dadasaheb Phalke made movie history with Raja Harishchandra 100 years ago
It all began when Dhundiraj Govind Phalke said "lights, camera, action" a century ago. On May 3, 1913, Raja Harishchandra, India's first feature film, released and was declared a hit. It was the beginning of an industry that would snowball into a behemoth, defining India's popular culture like no other.
A 100 years later, we bring you some facts about the film that started it all:
Dhundiraj Govind Phalke worked in the Archaelogical Society of India and then as a printer before staking everything he had on making a film. He was inspired to become a filmmaker by 1902 French movie The Life Of Christ, which he saw twice on the same day.
Dadasaheb Phalke quit his printing press career and went to London to learn the technicals of making a movie. He bought a camera, a printing machine, a perforator and raw film.
Advertisements seeking handsome actors for the lead role brought so much amateur and inadequate talent that Dadasaheb Phalke was forced to add a line saying "ugly faces need not apply."
Dadasaheb Phalke was forced to cast a male actor, Anna Salunke, in the role of queen Taramati because acting was not considered a decent profession for women. He found Anna Salunke in a restaurant, working as a cook. His only female applicants for the role were prostitutes from Mumbai's red-light areas, but even they backed out eventually. The success of Raja Harishchandra meant that for his second film, Mohini Bhasmasur, Dadasaheb Phalke had no trouble finding actresses for the female roles.
His cast and crew were told to say they were working in Dadasaheb's "factory" while filming took place.
Dadasaheb Phalke was 40 when he made Raja Harishchandra, and some of his friends were convinced he was mad, even trying to have him admitted to an asylum.
Dadasaheb Phalke pledged his life insurance policies, his wife sold her jewellery to raise money for the film.
Raja Harishchandra was partly shot in Mathura Bhawan in Dadar, on a road now renamed Dadasaheb Phalke Road.
The film's outdoor scenes were shot in a village near Pune, where the villagers reportedly mistook the prop swords for real ones.
The title plates that were inserted in between the silent scenes were in English and in Hindi.
Dadasaheb's entire family took part in the making of Raja Harishchandra, with his wife handling much of the technical details and his son playing a major role in the film, that of Harishchandra's son.
To woo his audience away from the stage to the screen, Dadasaheb Phalke promoted his films as: "A performance with 57,000 photographs. A picture two miles long. All for only three annas." He also preceded the film with a dance performance by two European girls for the first few days.
Raja Harishchandra released in Mumbai's Coronation Theatre and ran for 23 days. It was also shown in London in 1914. The story of Harishchandra was not just the subject of Dadasaheb's 1913 film but also of the first Marathi talkie, V Shantaram's Ayodhyecha Raja (1932).
Salman Khan is a good friend to Katrina Kaif's sister Isabel
Salman Khan famously looks out for his friends and the latest to benefit from his storied goodwill is rumoured ex-girlfriend Katrina Kaif's sister Isabel. Lucky Isabel is making her debut in Canadian film Dr Cabbie, which Salman is producing and also reportedly making a cameo appearance in.
Isabel, one of eight Kaif siblings, is a model and has an acting degree from the Lee Strasberg Institute.Dr Cabbie, which just began shooting, co-stars The Big Bang Theory's Kunal Nayyar and Speedy Singhs star Vinay Virmani.
Isabel's first Bollywood film is believed to be titled Coming Home and co-stars Anil Kapoor's son Harshvardhan.
Katrina and Salman reportedly dated for almost two years, breaking up in 2010. Katrina is rumoured to now be dating actor Ranbir Kapoor but is still very close to Salman and his family. She is regularly invited to family functions, is a close friend of Salman's sisters, and co-starred with him in last year's blockbuster film Ek Tha Tiger.
Katrina Kaif Family Background
Kaif was born in Hong Kong, an Indian Kashmiri father, Mohammed Kaif, and an English mother, Susanna Turquotte, a British citizen. Its parents separated when she was quite young. Kaif once said: "My dad, unfortunately, and not out of choice, has no influence on our upbringing, our religious or social or moral bearings." Whens she went to India, she changed her surname to her dad, Kaif, because it was Indian in origin.
Furthermore Ayesha Shroff has argued that the original name of the actress Katrina is Turquotte. She also claims that her father gave her name, even after Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif Kaif were top at the moment.
She added that they also had her name Katrina Kazi. From Hong Kong thought, she and her family moved to China and then to Japan. From there he went to France when she was 8, and thereafter lived for a few months at a time in Switzerland, Poland, Germany, Belgium and other European countries.
Thereafter, Katrina kaif moved with her family to Hawaii, and eventually to his country by his mother in England. Although it is often assumed that Kaif is from London, she lived there only for three years before moving to Mumbai. Kaif's personal life, including his relationships, is an important topic in the media.
