Indian cinema@100: 12 fun facts about Deewar

Indian cinema@100: 12 fun facts about Deewar
Deewar featured actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Parveen Babi, Nirupa Roy and Neetu Singh in the lead.
Deewar (1975) remains one of director Yash Chopra's most seminal films. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Parveen Babi, Nirupa Roy and Neetu Singh, Deewar gave the anti-hero star billing with its tale of two brothers on opposite sides of the law. If 1973's Zanjeer created the Angry Young Man,Deewar brought him centrestage. The film was also hailed for its strong women characters - the mother who rejects her criminal son, and Anita, the gangster's girlfriend who drinks, smokes and falls pregnant.

Did you know:

1.Yash Chopra's original wishlist was Rajesh Khanna as Vijay Verma, Navin Nischol as Ravi Verma and Vyjayanthimala as their mother. Salim-Javed, who had written the script with Shatrughan Sinha in mind, had a fallout with Rajesh Khanna and refused to have him in the film. Navin Nischol and Vyjayanthimala both refused their roles when they heard Rajesh Khanna would not be in the film. Yash Chopra then cast Amitabh Bachchan as Vijay. He almost offered the mother's role to Waheeda Rehman but decided against it because she was playing Amitabh's love interest in Kabhi Kabhie. He finally cast Nirupa Roy as the mother, and Shashi Kapoor as Ravi.

2.When the scene in which Vijay speaks to an idol of Shiva in a temple saying Aaj khush toh bahut hoge tum was shot, Amitabh Bachchan insisted that nobody but director Yash Chopra be present. It was shot at night and took Big B 15 takes to get right, because he was so intimidated by the thought of having to challenge God.

3.Amitabh Bachchan shot Sholay and Deewar at the same time - Sholay in the mornings, Deewar at night. Both Yash Chopra and Ramesh Sippy have credited him with never being late for either shoot.

4.Sholay wasn't the only film Amitabh Bachchan shot at the same time as Deewar. After Sholaywrapped, Yash Chopra shot Deewar and Kabhi Kabhie simultaneously and he would often worry that Amitabh Bachchan, who was starring in both films, would get confused between Kabhi Kabhie's dreamy poet Amit and Deewar's man at odds with society Vijay.

5.Writers Salim-Javed reportedly asked for an unheard of fee of Rs 8 lakhs for Deewar. They wrote the entire script and dialogue in one go, taking 45 days. At the first reading, every actor was given a bound, completed script, which was a rarity at the time.

6.On most nights, the cast and crew would feast on street food after pack up, often paid for by Amitabh Bachchan. On the night the climax was being shot at Mumbai's Ballard Pier, they had to stop because it started raining. So they drove to Bhendi Bazaar and Amitabh treated everyone to junk food.

7.There were no dialogues written for Amitabh Bachchan's death scene. Yash Chopra allowed him to ad lib the entire scene.

8.Producer Gulshan Rai read the script twice and cried both times.

9.Amitabh Bachchan's knotted shirt was a last-minute compromise when he found that the shirt he was to wear was too long and flapped around his knees. So he knotted it at the waist instead, starting a trend.

10.Salim-Javed and Yash Chopra planned to make Deewar minus songs. They had to admit defeat to producer Gulshan Rai who insisted on having songs and R D Burman was roped in to compose the soundtrack which included the hit number Kehdoon tumhe.

11.However, the writers refused to compromise on the name of the film, which was criticized by the crew as being too dry. Whenever the subject was brought up, they would joke "Let's call it Geeli Deewar, dryness chali jayegi."

12.The dubbed English version of the film was called I'll Die For Mama.

Indian cinema@100: 10 shocking Bollywood moments
Guru Dutt's unexpected death and Parveen Babi's descent into mental illness were among Bollywood’s darkest moments
Devika Rani elopes
Himanshu Rai, who ran Bombay Talkies, was left in the lurch when his wife, Devika Rani, ran off with the leading man of their latest production just four days before filming was to start.

Guru Dutt's death
Guru Dutt was found dead on his bed in a rented apartment at Peddar Road. He is said to have been mixing sleeping pills and alcohol as he couldn't rest. His death may have been suicide or just an accidental overdose. Incidentally, Asha Bhosle was the last person he spoke to.

Dilip Kumar slaps Madhubala
Dilip Kumar apparently slapped Madhubala on the sets of Mughal-e-Azam when they were shooting for the film. The reason surmised was that the actor was miffed with her diva-like attitude.

Divya Bharti's death
Divya Bharti who was married to director-producer Sajid Nadiadwala died in 1993. Divya fell to her death from a five-storey in Versova. There was much speculation by the media regarding Bharti's sudden demise including the possibility of suicide, accidental death, conspiracy or even murder. Some conspiracy theories involved her husband while other theories suggested mafia complicity.

Sanjay Dutt linked with bomb blast case
It came as a surprise when Sanjay Dutt's name cropped up in the 1993 bomb blast case. After political intervention by father Sunil Dutt, he was eventually let off the hook. As of now, he is expected to serve three and a half years in jail.

Zeenat Aman beaten
Zeenat Aman was apparently dating Sanjay Khan and the couple was in a hotel when Sanjay reportedly slapped Zeenat. To make things worse, the actress was left with not only a black eye but a damaged one at that.

Salman-Shah Rukh fight
Both the superstars fought at Katrina Kaif's birthday party about five years ago. There are multiple reasons attributed to the bust-up. One being professional insecurity.

Salman-Aishwarya ruckus
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was shooting for Chalte Chalte, when Salman apparently landed up on the sets and created a scene, which resulted in Aishwarya losing the film to Rani Mukherji. Salman also used to land up at her house late in the night and create fodder for tabloids.

Parveen Babi's accusations
She was rumoured to have diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia - a genetic mental illness - although she regularly denied it and said that it was a conspiracy by the film industry and the media to malign her image and make her appear as insane so that they can cover up their crimes!

Amitabh Bachchan's accident
Amitabh Bachchan had a life-threatening accident on the sets of Coolie. The actor remained clinically ill in hospital for many months, at times close to death. Nevertheless, he spent many months recovering and resumed filming later that year after a long period of recuperation.

A still from India's first talkie film Alam Ara which released in 1931
Every decade of the 100 years of Hindi films had its unique highlights. A pictorial.

1900s
The first step
The first fully indigenous Indian feature film Raja Harishchandra made by Dadasaheb Phalke, released on May 3, 1913. The silent film had titles in Hindi and English and released at the Coronation Theatre in Bombay.

Phalke followed with other films like Mohini Bhasmasur (which also released in 1913) Satyavan Savitri(1914) and Lanka Dahan (1914). Interestingly, in 1912, N G Chitre and R G Torney had made the first silent film Pundalik. But as it was part produced by a British company, it is not considered the first in the history of Indian marquee.

1920s
Business as usual
In the 1920s, filmmaking became a regular industry. The first Indian love story Dhiren Ganguly's Bilat Ferat released in 1921. Kohinoor Studios of Bombay began the mythological path with Bhakt Vidur from the Mahabharat.

V Shantaram
The prominent filmmakers of this decade were V Shantaram, Ardershir Irani, Baburao Painter, Chandulal Shah and Suket Singh. Some of the films produced include Painter's Maya Bazaar (1923), Irani's Anarkali (1928) and Shantaram's Gopal Krishna. Fatima Begum who is considered as the first female filmmaker made Bulbul-e-Parastan in 1926. The first international co-production was with Italy for Nala Damayanti in 1921.

1930s
Let's talk The first talkie film Alam Ara released in 1931. It starred Prithviraj Kapoor, Master Vithal and Zubeida. The film was based on a play written by Joseph David and directed by Ardeshir Irani.

V Shantaram's 1936 film Amar Jytoi was the earliest film to tackle women's emancipation. The country's first dream girl Devika Rani began her career in the '30s. The other female leads were Durga Khote and Nadia. Homi Wadia and JBH Wadia were the pioneers of stunt movies with Hunterwali. Ashok Kumar, Prithviraj Kapoor, P C Barua and K L Saigal.

1940s
Going bold
Kismet, written and directed by Gyan Mukherjee, and produced by Bombay Talkies released in 1943. The film came with some bold themes for the first time in Indian cinema showing an anti-hero character and an unmarried girl getting pregnant.

Kismet
The movie also has the distinction of the first double-role (Ashok Kumar) played by any Indian actor. Interestingly, in 1947, the year of the country's independence over 100 Hindi films were released. Mehboob's Aurat (the original version of Mother India) was also released during this decade.

1950s
Classic touch
Raj Kapoor's 1951 film Awaara is known for the chemistry between him and co-star Nargis. The film's dialogues, photography, songs and extraordinary dream sequence were its strength.

Awaara
It remains one of the most popular classics in Indian cinematic history of the '50s which was considered the golden age of Hindi filmdom with other classics like Mehboob Khan's Mother India and V Shantaram's Do Aankhen Barah Haath - both in 1957.

1960s
Golden decade
The 1960s is considered the golden decade in the history of the Indian cinema.

Mughal-e-Azam
The film that highlighted this decade was Mughal-e-Azam which is considered the biggest Indian film ever made and took nearly a decade to make before its release in 1960. It also saw the rise of several stars like Dev Anand, Mala Sinha and Sharmila Tagore.

A still from the movie Mughal-e-Azam

1970s
The biggest of them all
Sholay was released on August 15 1975. Ramesh Sippy's film is considered the biggest Hindi films ever. It was the first Indian film to have a stereophonic soundtrack, and to be presented in the 70 mm widescreen format.

Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan
The 1970s also marked the popularity of Amitabh Bachchan as the angry young man of cinema racing ahead of the superstar of the times - Rajesh Khanna.

1980s
Simply Sri
It was the decade when Sridevi ruled. Her 1986 film Naagin and 1989 film Chaalbaaz propelled her to the top position.

Her penchant for giggles and her ability to look distinctly tearful as well were enough to bring the masses to the movie-halls. Along with Madhuri Dixit who shone in Tezaab (1988) and Ram Lakhan(1989), they were considered the two biggest stars of the time.

1990s
King Khan arrives
It was marked by the arrival of Shah Rukh Khan. King Khan reign through the 1990s went by and large unchallenged.

His 1995 film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge with Kajol is considered an all-time blockbuster and remains as the longest-running film in the history of Indian cinema.

2000s
Brush with the Oscars
With Aamir Khan's Lagaan making its way to the Oscars, the 2000s saw a growth in Bollywood's popularity in the world.

Lagaan
This led the nation's filmmaking to new heights in terms of quality, cinematography and innovative story lines as well as technical advances in areas such as special effects and animation.

2010s
It's magic
This decade, so far, belongs to Salman Khan. His 2010 film Dabangg raked in big money. It made the audience clap, whistle and dance in cinema halls to enjoy their outing. Sallu has followed it up with Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2 last year. Clearly it will take a while for another star to reach his current top slot.

How Dadasaheb Phalke made movie history with Raja Harishchandra 100 years ago

How Dadasaheb Phalke made movie history with Raja Harishchandra 100 years ago
It all began when Dhundiraj Govind Phalke said "lights, camera, action" a century ago. On May 3, 1913, Raja Harishchandra, India's first feature film, released and was declared a hit. It was the beginning of an industry that would snowball into a behemoth, defining India's popular culture like no other.

A 100 years later, we bring you some facts about the film that started it all:

Dhundiraj Govind Phalke worked in the Archaelogical Society of India and then as a printer before staking everything he had on making a film. He was inspired to become a filmmaker by 1902 French movie The Life Of Christ, which he saw twice on the same day.

Dadasaheb Phalke quit his printing press career and went to London to learn the technicals of making a movie. He bought a camera, a printing machine, a perforator and raw film.

Advertisements seeking handsome actors for the lead role brought so much amateur and inadequate talent that Dadasaheb Phalke was forced to add a line saying "ugly faces need not apply."

Dadasaheb Phalke was forced to cast a male actor, Anna Salunke, in the role of queen Taramati because acting was not considered a decent profession for women. He found Anna Salunke in a restaurant, working as a cook. His only female applicants for the role were prostitutes from Mumbai's red-light areas, but even they backed out eventually. The success of Raja Harishchandra meant that for his second film, Mohini Bhasmasur, Dadasaheb Phalke had no trouble finding actresses for the female roles.

His cast and crew were told to say they were working in Dadasaheb's "factory" while filming took place.

Dadasaheb Phalke was 40 when he made Raja Harishchandra, and some of his friends were convinced he was mad, even trying to have him admitted to an asylum.

Dadasaheb Phalke pledged his life insurance policies, his wife sold her jewellery to raise money for the film.

Raja Harishchandra was partly shot in Mathura Bhawan in Dadar, on a road now renamed Dadasaheb Phalke Road.

The film's outdoor scenes were shot in a village near Pune, where the villagers reportedly mistook the prop swords for real ones.

The title plates that were inserted in between the silent scenes were in English and in Hindi.

Dadasaheb's entire family took part in the making of Raja Harishchandra, with his wife handling much of the technical details and his son playing a major role in the film, that of Harishchandra's son.

To woo his audience away from the stage to the screen, Dadasaheb Phalke promoted his films as: "A performance with 57,000 photographs. A picture two miles long. All for only three annas." He also preceded the film with a dance performance by two European girls for the first few days.

Raja Harishchandra released in Mumbai's Coronation Theatre and ran for 23 days. It was also shown in London in 1914. The story of Harishchandra was not just the subject of Dadasaheb's 1913 film but also of the first Marathi talkie, V Shantaram's Ayodhyecha Raja (1932).
